Detailed description of Sea Island Golf Club, Seaside Golf Course

Sea Island Golf Club, is a Resort, 54 hole golf facility located on the southern tip of St Simons Island, Georgia. The resort has three 18-hole golf courses, The Seaside Course, The Plantation Course and The Retreat Course.

The Seaside Golf Course

The Seaside Golf Course was originally built as a nine-hole course by legendary English architects Harry S. Colt and Charles Alison in 1929. In 1973, Joe Lee designed the Marshside Nine. These two distinct nines were transformed into the current world-class Seaside course in 1999 by Tom Fazio.

This true ocean side course places a premium on careful shot selection, recovery and putting. Offering Sea Island's most demanding layout, the storied Seaside Course has been the site of many prestigious golf events and has challenged some of the game's finest golfers including Bobby Jones, Jack Nicklaus, and Sam Snead. Tidal creeks, dunes, salt marshes and the St. Simons Sound frame the course, which plays fast, firm, and fun in the tradition of legendary Scottish links.

Seaside is prominently placed on Golf Digest's list of "Top 100 Courses in the United States." From the championship tees, Seaside is a 7,055 yard, par 70 course with a 141 slope rating.

Seaside is Sea Island's most demanding layout, Seaside is the host venue for the PGA TOUR's McGladrey Classic. Seaside has also hosted multiple USGA events, challenging golf's best amateur players.

As a top 100 course, this layout is challenging, fair, and in great condition. Played the course on a blustery day but the winds were manageable. The greens, bunkers, and fairways were in great shape. Many of the greens had steep drop-offs so that anytime your ball barely rolled off the green it went steeply down leaving a very tough up and down pitch or bump and run. However, the green surrounds were as pure as a putting green. The course has lots of water but in most cases the hazards are nicely placed so that good shots are rewarded. The $300+ green fee is too steep for this course, especially since we stayed in one of the course's lodges. $200 would be a fair price. Otherwise, put this on your bucket list to play at least once.

Would travel: 30-60 Miles, Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: I would play again, Better than average course for the area, Expensive and worth it

Had the privilege to play this course as a benefit of volunteering for the McGladrey Classic. It is a well maintained course as you would expect. The course is tough, but fair. I am a high handicapper, but had several runs a par and even a roll at a birdie or two. I would recommend playing this course to everyone if the change arises.

This is a spectacular course, located at The Lodge at Sea Island. It is host to a PGA Tour event and numerous other amateur events over the years. It has many group and corporate outings, so accessibility and pace of play can be an issue. Very few trees, primarily dunes and wind swept fairways. Very challenging, especially if the wind is up. Highly recommended.

Bottom line: I would play again, Better than average course for the area, Ranks with the best in this price level
